Reigning CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan debuted his fifth studio album KILL THE LIGHTS at #1 on both the Billboard Top 200 and Top Country Albums charts this week, selling 320,063 albums with 345,211 equivalent album units. This is Luke’s third consecutive album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200.
KILL THE LIGHTS also becomes the third-largest album debut in 2015, next to the r&b/hip hop releases from Drake and Kendrick Lamar. KILL THE LIGHTS is also the highest country album debut in the last two years, since Luke’s own CRASH MY PARTY release debuted at #1 in August 2013.
Fans and critics alike are raving that this is Luke’s best album to date. The Associated Press said, “[Luke is] showing he can grow in ways that reflect his age and experience… the perpetually upbeat star takes his first steps toward acknowledging the complexities that come with maturity.” “The party continues—but the joy seems more grounded than ever in the here and now,” claimed HITS Daily Double and the New York Times said Luke’s “brand of country music is dynamic, attitudinal.”
As part of Luke’s album promotional tour he performed for an exclusive iHeartRadio album release party, appeared on Good Morning America’s “2015 Summer Concert Series” live from Rumsey Playfield in Central Park, played a private show for Citi-card members at Irving Plaza that was also streamed live on the Live Nation Channel on Yahoo and on the Yahoo app. He performed his new single “Strip It Down” on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and played a game of Catch Phrase. His digital promotions included a Spotify takeover, partnering with Smule’s Sing! app by releasing “Kick the Dust Up” and a duet with Jason Durelo, becoming the first country artist to partner with Tinder to debut a new track, performed “To The Moon and Back” from KILL THE LIGHTS for the new Live for Facebook Mentions, signed digital copies of the album for fans who purchased the CD through a post on Luke’s Facebook page and the album cover also appeared on the hood of Brad Keselowski’s Miller Lite #2 car at the Watkins Glen race.
Luke also partnered with Target on the #LukeBox project, writing 25 original songs on the spot from fan requests through Twitter. He also performed an acoustic version of “Way Way Back” from KILL THE LIGHTS as part of the promotion.
KILL THE LIGHTS was produced by Jeff Stevens and Jody Stevens and contains 13 songs, six of which were co-written by Luke including the title track. KILL THE LIGHTS is the follow up to Luke’s most successful album to date, CRASH MY PARTY, which contains six consecutive No. 1 singles, is certified Double Platinum and has currently sold over two million copies with eight million digital downloads.
